Boulders Climber Jonas-McRae Makes Successful Ascent of Squamish’s “The Reckoning”

Central Saanich, BC – The Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich is pleased to announce that Nanaimo’s 19-year old Elan Jonas-McRae has made a successful ascent of “The Reckoning”, one of the most difficult bouldering problems in the world-class Squamish area of British Columbia.

“The Reckoning”, with its sit start (climbers begin sitting on the ground) is graded V14 on the difficulty scale  and is one of only four problems in the Squamish area to bear this designation.  The Hueco “V” grading scale assigns technical grades to bouldering problems and in that system, V16 is currently the top level of difficulty in the scale.

Jonas-McRae’s feat is notable as it is just the second ever ascent of “The Reckoning” – the first being completed by Tim Doyle in 2010 – and the first time that any of the four V14 problems in the Squamish area has seen a second ascent.

Jonas-McRae, one of the top young climbers in the country, said of his feat, “I was definitely able to get rid of all the negative thoughts on this attempt, and stayed positive and gave it 100 percent. I think it also helped that my spotter was supportive.”

Jonas-McRae trains regularly at The Boulders and was a member of the 2013 Canadian Youth Climbing team that participated at the IFSC World Youth Climbing Championships. He took silver at the 2013 Canadian Youth Nationals and recently earned a silver medal at the UK National Climbing Championships. He also participated in recent World Cup climbing events in Kranj, Slovenia and Valence, France.
