North Vancouver’s Sean McColl Sets New Record – 2 Silvers in 2 Days at World Cup

Kamloops, BC – The Sport Climbing Association of British Columbia (SCBC) is pleased to announce that SCBC member Sean McColl of North Vancouver has set a record for the highest placement in a triple-discipline competition by placing second in both bouldering and lead climbing at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup stop in Haiyang, China on June 20-22, 2014. McColl also placed 20th in the speed discipline.

The competition was the only three-discipline stop on the IFSC World Cup Tour this season. The record had been previously held by Czech climber Adam Ondra, who earned a silver and bronze in bouldering and lead in 2011, in Arco, Italy.

McColl, 26, the defending overall men’s world champion, was excited by his performance, saying, “I went into the triple World Cup hoping to make finals in both lead and boulder. I could never have expected to be on the podium with two silver medals around my neck.”

Other SCBC members also competed in Haiyang, with Nanaimo’s Elan Jonas McRae earning a 22nd in lead, and Libor Hroza finishing 8th in speed climbing. Hroza competes for the Czech Republic but has been training in Victoria at the Boulders Climbing Gym. The next speed competitions will be his opportunity to set a new world record for the 15-metre speed climb. Since coming to Canada to train, he has been setting times under the current world record of 5.88 seconds, with his personal best now sitting at 5.58 seconds.

McColl will now head back to Europe to continue on the World Cup circuit, with a first stop at the bouldering World Cup on June 27-28 in Laval, France. He will be joined at the next stages of the lead and speed World Cups by a number of other British Columbian athletes.
